Description
Make early phonics learning fun with this simple Autumn Themed EYFS Initial Sounds activity. Designed for children in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), this resource helps children practise recognising and writing the initial sounds in autumn-themed words.
Using colourful pictures as prompts, children are encouraged to look carefully at each image, say the word aloud and listen for the beginning sound. They can then identify the corresponding letter and write it in the box provided.
This activity is ideal for children who are confident with recognising and forming single letters and are ready to develop their understanding of initial sounds and early phonics.
The autumn theme provides an engaging seasonal context for practising letter sounds, phonics, oral blending skills and early writing. It can be used as an independent activity, within a small-group phonics session, as part of continuous provision or as a simple classroom literacy task.
Skills supported include:
Recognising initial and beginning sounds
Listening carefully to the sounds in words
Identifying corresponding letters
Practising letter formation
Developing early phonics skills
Building confidence with independent writing
This EYFS autumn phonics activity is a simple and engaging way to support children’s early literacy development while introducing or reinforcing the sounds at the beginning of familiar autumn-themed words.
