Compare Numbers – Teddy Bear’s Picnic
Help children develop their understanding of comparing quantities with this fun picnic-themed maths activity. Children compare the food belonging to each bear and identify which has more, fewer or the same amount. The strips can also be used for counting and subitising practice. Ideal for Early Years and KS1 maths.
Description
Support children to develop their understanding of comparing quantities with this engaging picnic-themed maths activity. Children compare the amounts of picnic food belonging to each bear and use mathematical language to describe how the quantities are different or the same.
To use the resource, laminate and cut out the strips. Ask children to look carefully at the picnic food each bear has and compare the quantities. Encourage them to answer questions such as “Which bear has more?”, “Which bear has fewer?” and “Which bears have the same amount?”
This activity provides valuable opportunities for children to develop their understanding of number and quantity while using mathematical vocabulary in context. Encourage children to answer in complete sentences, for example, “That bear has more…” or “That bear has fewer…”. This helps children develop both their mathematical language and confidence in explaining their thinking.
The resource is ideal for Early Years and KS1 maths and can be used for whole-class teaching, small-group activities, independent learning, continuous provision or practical maths interventions.
Children can practise:
Comparing quantities
Identifying which group has more
Identifying which group has fewer
Recognising when groups have the same amount
Counting objects accurately
Developing early number sense
Using mathematical vocabulary such as more, fewer and same
Explaining and communicating their mathematical thinking
Recognising quantities through subitising
The picnic bear theme provides a fun and accessible context for exploring more and fewer, while the visual representations allow children to compare quantities without relying solely on written numerals.
The cards can also be used in other ways, including counting practice and subitising activities, making this a flexible resource that can be revisited as children’s mathematical skills develop.
For additional practical learning, encourage children to recreate the picnic food using counters or other manipulatives and physically compare the groups. This can help reinforce the connection between quantities, counting and mathematical language.
A versatile early years comparing quantities resource for developing children’s understanding of number, quantity and comparison through fun, practical maths activities.
