To use the resource, simply laminate and cut out the cards. You can use one complete set of cards or mix together the number and object cards. Ask children to choose two cards and compare the number or quantity shown on each card. Encourage them to talk about which card shows more, fewer or the same and explain how they know.

The cards can be used in a variety of practical ways, making them ideal for Early Years and KS1 maths, small-group activities, independent learning, continuous provision, maths interventions or practical work in a tuff tray.

As well as comparing numbers and quantities, the cards can be used for a range of other early maths activities, including:

Comparing numbers and quantities

Ordering numbers
Ordering quantities
Counting objects
Developing number recognition

Practical comparison activities also provide opportunities for children to explain their mathematical thinking and use important vocabulary such as more, fewer, greater, less and equal.

This flexible comparing numbers and quantities resource can be revisited regularly and adapted to suit different children’s needs and levels of mathematical development. Use the cards for a quick matching activity, a practical maths game or as part of a wider lesson focusing on number and quantity.

A useful and adaptable early years maths resource for developing number sense, comparison, subitising and understanding of quantity.
