Compose and Decompose Shapes – Build a Shape
A hands-on EYFS composing and decomposing shapes activity for Reception children. Perfect for maths provision and continuous provision, this resource encourages children to combine shapes, explore different possibilities and develop spatial reasoning and mathematical vocabulary.
Description
Support children’s early mathematical development and understanding of shape with this hands-on composing and decomposing shapes activity. Designed for EYFS and Reception children, this resource encourages young learners to explore how different shapes can be combined to create new shapes.
The activity is ideal for use in continuous provision, allowing children to investigate shapes independently or with adult support. Simply laminate the cards and divide them into two. Provide children with a selection of different shapes and challenge them to build the blue target shape using the other shapes shown.
As children experiment with combining and rearranging shapes, they develop their understanding of shape composition, spatial awareness and spatial reasoning. The open-ended nature of the activity encourages children to try different combinations, make predictions and discover that the same shape can sometimes be created in more than one way.
The activity also provides opportunities for children to develop their mathematical vocabulary and explain their thinking. Encourage discussion by asking:
What shapes did you use?
What new shape have you made?
Can you make any other shapes?
These questions encourage children to describe the shapes they have selected, explain how they have combined them and explore alternative solutions.
This EYFS shape activity is a practical and engaging resource for maths provision, small-group activities or adult-led learning. It is particularly useful for developing children’s confidence with composing and decomposing shapes, while encouraging them to explore, investigate and communicate their mathematical ideas.
