Description

Support children to develop their understanding of numbers beyond 10 with this engaging counting apples activity. Using pictures of apples on a tree, children are encouraged to recognise that there are already 10 apples and then count on from 10 to find the total number of apples.

This practical and visual maths resource helps children develop accurate counting skills while building their understanding of the composition of teen numbers. By recognising the group of 10 first and then counting the additional apples, children can begin to understand that numbers from 11 to 20 are made up of one ten and additional ones.

The resource includes two differentiated sheets, making it easy to provide the appropriate level of challenge and support for different learners. The second sheet includes a number track to provide additional support for children who are developing confidence in recognising and writing numbers.

This resource is ideal for Early Years and KS1 maths, and can be used for whole-class teaching, small-group activities, maths interventions, independent work or continuous provision. It provides a simple way for children to practise counting on from 10 and explore the structure of teen numbers.

Children can practise:

Counting beyond 10
Counting accurately from 10
Recognising numbers from 11 to 20
Understanding the composition of teen numbers
Recognising that teen numbers contain one full group of 10
Counting individual objects to find a total
Recognising and writing numerals
Using a number track to support number recognition

The differentiated format allows children to work independently at an appropriate level, while the visual apple theme makes the activity accessible and engaging.

This resource works particularly well alongside other tens frame and teen number activities, giving children repeated opportunities to develop a secure understanding of numbers beyond 10 and the relationship between tens and ones.
