Description
Pupils must understand one-tenth in terms of regrouping and exchanging.
Dienes can be used to illustrate the relative size of 1 and one-tenth, with a ‘flat’ representing 1.
Pupils should experience:
- how 10 tenths can be regrouped into 1 one
- how to exchange 1 one for 10 tenths
Language focus “10 tenths is equal to 1 one.”
Pupils must then be able to work out how many tenths there are in other multiples of 0.1
Language focus “ 18 tenths is equal to 1 one and 8 tenths and is written as 1.8. ”
