This Year 4 maths lesson plan introduces pupils to Roman numerals, building on prior learning of place value, addition, and subtraction. The lesson begins with a starter activity that revises key place value concepts. Children use whiteboards to answer questions, build the largest and smallest numbers, and identify numbers within a given range. Teachers can use this opportunity to assess pupils’ understanding and prepare them for learning about Roman numerals.

During the introduction, pupils explore the Roman numeral system, which originated in Ancient Rome. Using interactive slides, children learn the key symbols and rules, such as how numerals are combined and the value of each symbol. Examples include III representing 3 (1+1+1) and counting in tens. Pupils are encouraged to copy numerals into their books to support learning and practice recognising and writing the numbers.

The main activity involves a paired “crack the code” task. Children receive a resource sheet where they decode numbers represented by Roman numerals. Using the slides as a reference, they identify the numeral’s value and find the corresponding letters to complete the code. This hands-on activity encourages collaboration, logical thinking, and accurate application of Roman numeral rules.

In the plenary, pupils apply their knowledge by completing tasks such as filling in missing numerals on a clock and writing Roman numerals from visual prompts. The lesson addresses common misconceptions, including confusing symbols, misinterpreting the value of numerals, adding symbols regardless of order, or repeating symbols too many times.
