Description

This Year 3 Place Value – Identifying 3-Digit Numbers lesson plan helps pupils develop a secure understanding of how numbers can be represented in different ways, in line with the National Curriculum expectations for place value in Key Stage 2.

Designed as a practical, discussion-based lesson, this resource encourages children to explore how hundreds, tens and ones can be represented using visual models and manipulatives. Pupils begin by revisiting prior learning from Year 3 place value, fractions, addition and subtraction, counting in 10s and 100s to reinforce number fluency.

Through carefully structured teaching slides, children explore pictorial representations of 10 and 100 before progressing to identifying 3-digit numbers using base 10 equipment and visual representations. They are guided to:

  • Identify the number of hundreds, tens and ones shown

  • Use stem sentences to explain their thinking

  • Write the number represented accurately

  • Understand how place value affects a digit’s value

During the main activity, pupils use sticker sheets featuring different number representations. They stick each image into their maths books and record the number shown, reinforcing independence and written accuracy. The plenary encourages reasoning and discussion, asking pupils to identify the ‘odd one out’ and justify their answers using place value vocabulary.

This resource includes:

  • Clear teaching slides modelling different representations

  • Structured fluency recap activities

  • Hands-on sticker-based task to promote engagement

  • Opportunities for mathematical reasoning and discussion

  • Explicit focus on common misconceptions, including:

    • Counting individual objects instead of groups

    • Confusing digits with their place value

    • Omitting zero as a placeholder

    • Errors when counting grouped tens and hundreds

Perfect for Year 3 teachers seeking a mastery-focused maths lesson on identifying and representing 3-digit numbers, this ready-to-teach resource strengthens conceptual understanding and mathematical communication.
