This Year 4 Place Value lesson—“Counting Through Negative Numbers”—introduces children to numbers below zero in a clear, relatable and practical way. Building on earlier work counting backwards in 10s, 100s and 1,000s, pupils first revisit why they normally stop at zero, before challenging Esin’s misconception that “there are no numbers less than zero.”

The lesson uses real-life contexts—thermometers, submarines and lifts—to introduce negative numbers and the minus sign. Children explore a number track from 5 to –5, discovering that positive and negative numbers sit the same distance from zero and form opposite pairs. Misconceptions are explicitly addressed, including Zach’s belief that –5 is “greater” than –2 because 5 is a larger digit; pupils learn that moving left on the number line always leads to smaller values.

For the main activity, children create their own vertical and horizontal negative number lines using border roll or receipt roll. Starting from zero, they extend their lines to at least –20, with optional challenges to count in 2s or 3s for greater depth. They then roll, fold and stick the number lines into their books as a practical tool they can refer back to. This hands-on approach helps establish fluency, accuracy and confidence when navigating below zero.

The plenary extends learning by counting in negative intervals of 2s, 5s and 10s, and comparing values such as –100 and –20 to strengthen understanding of magnitude. With strong conceptual modelling, reasoning questions and real-world connections, this lesson provides an engaging introduction to negative numbers that supports secure mathematical thinking.
