Description

Help children develop their understanding of odd and even numbers with this simple and engaging colouring maths activity. Children explore the pattern of odd and even numbers by using different colours to identify each type of number.

Children are asked to colour the odd numbers red and the even numbers blue. Using a consistent colour for each type of number helps children visually identify the repeating odd and even pattern and begin to recognise whether a number is odd or even.

This activity is ideal for KS1, providing a simple visual introduction to odd and even numbers. The colouring element makes the resource accessible and engaging, while giving children an opportunity to look carefully at numbers and notice the repeating pattern.

Children can practise:
Recognising odd numbers
Recognising even numbers
Identifying patterns in numbers
Developing number recognition
Exploring the relationship between odd and even numbers
Using mathematical language
Developing confidence with numbers

For an alternative version of the activity, print the resource onto larger paper and invite children to paint the odd and even numbers using the two different colours. This can make the activity particularly engaging as part of a maths or creative learning area.

Encourage children to talk about the pattern they notice. Ask questions such as “What do you notice about the numbers?”, “Which numbers are odd?”, “Which numbers are even?” and “What comes next in the pattern?” This helps children begin to describe the repeating sequence of odd and even numbers.

The activity can be used as a teacher-led focus group, an independent maths activity or as part of continuous provision. Children can revisit the activity to reinforce their recognition of odd and even numbers and become more confident in identifying the pattern.

For an extension, challenge children to continue the pattern using number cards or write the next few odd and even numbers. You could also ask them to sort a selection of numbers into odd and even groups and explain how they know where each number belongs.

This simple activity provides a visual and practical way for children to develop their understanding of odd and even numbers, number patterns and mathematical reasoning, supporting important foundations for future number learning.
