Odd and Even Numbers – Socks
Help children explore odd and even numbers with this engaging socks maths activity. Children count the socks, circle pairs and identify whether a sock is left over to decide if the number is odd or even.
Description
Help children develop their understanding of odd and even numbers with this engaging socks maths activity. Children count the socks, make pairs and use the remaining socks to work out whether each number is odd or even.
To complete the activity, ask children to first count the socks and write the total in the number column. They can then circle the pairs of socks and look carefully to see whether there is an odd sock left over.
If there is one sock without a partner, children can identify the number as odd. If all the socks can be matched into pairs, the number is even. This gives children a clear visual and practical way to understand the relationship between odd and even numbers.
Once they have explored the socks, children can circle whether the number is odd or even. Encourage them to explain their reasoning using mathematical language, such as pair, equal, odd, even and left over.
The numbers are presented in order, giving children an opportunity to begin noticing the repeating pattern of odd and even numbers. As they work through the activity, they may start to predict whether the next number will be odd or even.
Children can practise:
Counting quantities accurately
Recognising odd and even numbers
Making and identifying pairs
Understanding equal groups of two
Identifying when one item is left over
Recording quantities using numerals
Recognising patterns in the counting sequence
Explaining mathematical reasoning
Use this activity as an independent maths task, during a focus group session or as part of continuous provision. Adult questioning can extend the learning with prompts such as, “Can you make pairs?”, “Is there one sock left over?” and “What do you notice about the numbers?”
For an additional challenge, ask children to predict whether a number is odd or even before counting the socks, or encourage them to continue the sequence and explain the pattern they notice.
This practical KS1 maths resource provides a simple visual context for developing number sense and building children’s confidence with odd and even numbers.
