Description

Pupils need to be able to identify the place value of each digit in a number.

Language focus “In 67,000.4…

  • the 6 represents 6 ten-thousands; the value of the 6 is 60,000
  • the 7 represents 7 thousands; the value of the 7 is 7,000
  • the 4 represents 4 tenths; the value of the 4 is 0.4 ”.

Pupils need to experience:

  • how to use a separator (such as a comma) every third digit from the decimal separator to help read and write numbers
  • copying numbers from calculator displays, inserting thousands separators and decimal points correctly

Pupils must be able to combine units from millions to hundredths to compose numbers, and partition numbers into these units, and solve related addition and subtraction calculations.

Pupils need to experience variation in the order of presentation of the units, so that they understand, for example,

that 5,034,000.2 is equal to 4,000 + 30,000 + 0.2 + 5,000,000.
