Description
Make Remembrance-themed learning fun with this simple and engaging EYFS codebreaker activity. Designed for children who are becoming confident with reading and forming single letters, this resource combines picture matching, letter recognition and early writing skills in an accessible codebreaker activity.
Children are encouraged to look carefully at each symbol or picture and identify the corresponding letter. They can then write the correct letter underneath each picture in the table. Once all the letters have been decoded, children can use their phonics and reading skills to work out the hidden phrase.
This Remembrance Day codebreaker for EYFS is a simple way to support early literacy while introducing a Remembrance theme. It can be used as an independent activity, during continuous provision, as part of a small-group task or as a fun classroom challenge.
Skills supported include:
Letter recognition
Early reading skills
Letter formation and handwriting
Picture and symbol matching
Phonics and decoding
Visual discrimination
Confidence with single-letter writing
The activity is particularly suitable for EYFS children who are confident recognising, reading and forming individual letters.
Simply encourage children to match each picture to its corresponding letter, write the letters in the spaces provided and then see if they can read the hidden message.
Who can crack the code and discover what it says?
