Description
Make Year 6 maths meaningful with this engaging Remembrance Day themed maths activity based on poppy sales in the weeks leading up to Remembrance Day.
Children explore realistic sales data showing the cumulative amount of money raised each day. They use the information to practise important Year 6 maths skills, including decimals, money, data interpretation and line graphs.
Pupils begin by reading and interpreting a table of poppy sales data. They calculate differences between amounts, compare changes over time and identify when the greatest increase in money raised occurred. This provides a purposeful context for practising calculations involving decimal numbers and money.
The activity then challenges children to represent the data on a line graph. Pupils choose an appropriate scale, label the axes, plot the data accurately and join the points to show how the total amount raised changed over time. They are also encouraged to interpret the graph, identify trends and explain why a line graph is an appropriate way to represent the data.
Skills covered
Reading and interpreting tables
Working with decimals and money
Adding and subtracting decimal amounts
Calculating differences
Comparing data
Constructing line graphs
Choosing an appropriate scale
Labelling axes and plotting data

Mathematical reasoning and explanation
This Year 6 Remembrance Day maths resource is ideal for use in the weeks leading up to Remembrance Day, Armistice Day or Remembrance Sunday. It provides a meaningful cross-curricular context while allowing pupils to practise key areas of the Year 6 maths curriculum.
The activity can be used as a whole-class lesson, independent maths task, partner activity, homework or additional practice. It is particularly useful for reinforcing statistics and data representation, while also giving children opportunities to apply their knowledge of decimals and money to a realistic situation.
A purposeful and engaging way to bring Remembrance Day and Year 6 maths together, helping pupils see how mathematical skills can be used to understand and represent real-world information.
