Repeating Patterns Cards
A practical EYFS repeating patterns activity for provision. Children use a range of objects to copy and continue the patterns shown on the cards before creating their own repeating sequences.
Description
Support children in developing their early mathematical thinking with this practical and engaging EYFS repeating patterns activity. Designed to support the skill of ‘continue, copy and create repeating patterns’, these pattern cards provide children with opportunities to explore sequences, repetition and simple mathematical patterns through hands-on learning.
Simply laminate and cut out the cards before providing children with a selection of objects to use. These could include counters, blocks, buttons, cubes, natural objects, loose parts or other suitable classroom resources. Encourage children to look carefully at each card, identify the repeating pattern and use their objects to copy and continue the sequence.
Once children have developed confidence with copying and continuing the patterns, challenge them to create their own repeating patterns. Encourage children to talk about the pattern they have made and explain what would come next.
This EYFS maths activity is ideal for continuous provision and can be used independently, in small groups or alongside other early maths activities. The cards can be revisited regularly, allowing children to develop their understanding of repeating patterns through practical exploration and play.
Skills supported include:
Copying repeating patterns
Continuing repeating patterns
Creating their own patterns
Recognising sequences and repetition
Developing early mathematical thinking
Sorting and matching
Problem-solving
Exploring patterns through hands-on play
Talking about and explaining patterns
This resource is particularly suitable for EYFS children developing their understanding of repeating patterns and provides a simple way to incorporate mathematical learning into everyday provision.
Can the children copy the patterns, continue the sequences and then create repeating patterns of their own?
