Repeating Patterns Caterpillars
A fun EYFS caterpillar repeating patterns activity where children colour or paint to continue the patterns shown. Children then create their own repeating pattern on the final caterpillar.
Description
Support children in developing their early mathematical understanding with this fun and engaging EYFS repeating patterns activity featuring colourful caterpillars. Designed to support children to ‘continue, copy and create repeating patterns’, this activity provides a creative way for children to explore sequences and repetition through colouring and painting.
Children are encouraged to look carefully at the pattern already shown on each caterpillar and work out what should come next. They can then continue the repeating patterns by colouring or painting the remaining sections of each caterpillar.
Once children have practised copying and continuing the given patterns, challenge them to use the final caterpillar to create a repeating pattern of their own. This gives children an opportunity to apply what they have learned and experiment with their own sequences and combinations.
This EYFS maths pattern activity is a simple and enjoyable way to develop early mathematical thinking through creative play. It can be used as an independent activity, small-group task, maths challenge or as part of continuous provision.
Skills supported include:
Copying repeating patterns
Continuing repeating patterns
Creating their own repeating patterns
Recognising sequences and repetition
Developing early mathematical thinking
Colour recognition
Fine motor skills through colouring and painting
Problem-solving
Exploring and explaining patterns
This activity is particularly suitable for EYFS children developing their understanding of repeating patterns and provides a fun opportunity to combine early maths learning with creative mark-making.
Can the children work out what comes next, complete each caterpillar’s repeating pattern and then create a pattern of their own?
