Description

Help children develop their spatial reasoning skills with this engaging 2D shapes animal-building maths activity. Children select, rotate and manipulate shapes to recreate an animal shown on a template, developing their ability to visualise how different shapes fit together.

To prepare the activity, laminate the template cards and laminate and cut out the individual shapes. Children can then select the appropriate shapes and use them to build the animal on the template.

Children will need to look carefully at the picture, identify the shapes they need and rotate them so that they fit the spaces correctly. This gives children a practical opportunity to explore shape, position, orientation and spatial relationships while developing problem-solving and visualisation skills.

Alternatively, children can cut out the shapes themselves and stick them together to create the animal picture. This provides an additional opportunity to develop fine motor and scissor skills alongside mathematical learning.

The shapes can also be used more creatively, allowing children to design and build their own animal pictures or other creations. This encourages children to experiment with different shapes and combinations while developing their confidence with spatial reasoning.

Children can practise:
Developing spatial reasoning skills
Recognising and selecting 2D shapes
Rotating and manipulating shapes
Understanding shape orientation
Developing visualisation skills
Exploring position and spatial relationships
Developing problem-solving skills
Developing scissor and fine motor skills
Using mathematical language

Encourage children to describe the shapes they are using and explain how they know where each piece belongs. Questions such as “Which shape do you need?”, “What happens if you rotate it?”, “How do you know it fits there?” and “Which way does the shape need to face?” can help children explain their mathematical thinking.

The laminated templates and shapes make this activity ideal for a maths area or continuous provision, where children can revisit the activity and practise selecting, rotating and positioning shapes independently. It can also be used as a teacher-led focus group to model spatial reasoning and mathematical vocabulary.

For differentiation, provide only the shapes required for a particular animal for children who need additional support. More confident learners could be given a larger selection of shapes and challenged to work out which pieces they need without being shown the answers.

For an extension, encourage children to use the shapes to create their own animals. They could then describe which shapes they used, how many of each shape they needed and whether any shapes had to be rotated to complete their design.

This practical activity provides an engaging way to develop spatial reasoning, 2D shape knowledge, visualisation, problem-solving and fine motor skills, while giving children opportunities to think creatively and use mathematical language.
