Description

Help children develop their understanding of sharing equally with this fun gingerbread men maths activity. Children explore how a quantity can be distributed fairly between groups, using buttons as a practical and engaging way to investigate equal sharing.

For the best results, this resource is designed to be printed onto A3 paper. Children can cut out the strip of buttons, count the required number and then share the buttons equally between the gingerbread men. Once they are happy that the buttons have been shared fairly, they can glue them onto the gingerbread men.

The resource can also be laminated and the buttons cut out individually for a reusable practical maths activity. Children can physically move and place the buttons onto the gingerbread men, allowing them to explore equal sharing using concrete resources.

This activity is ideal for Early Years and KS1, providing a practical introduction to equal sharing and the early concepts that underpin division. Children can physically distribute the buttons between the gingerbread men and check that each character has received the same amount.

Children can practise:
Sharing quantities equally
Recognising equal groups
Counting accurately
Comparing quantities
Understanding early division
Using mathematical language
Explaining their mathematical thinking
Developing problem-solving skills

Encourage children to explain how they have shared the buttons. Useful questions include:

“How many buttons did you have?”
“How many buttons do they have each?”
“Do they have an equal amount?”
“How do you know they have the same?”
“Can you share the buttons in a different way?”

There are several ways to use this resource, making it suitable for differentiation and different learning environments. Children who benefit from a hands-on approach can use the laminated buttons and gingerbread men, while others can work directly on the worksheet by cutting, arranging and gluing the buttons.

The activity can be used as a teacher-led focus group, maths intervention or as part of continuous provision. Adjust the number of buttons or gingerbread men involved to provide an appropriate level of challenge for different learners.

For an extension, ask children to predict how many buttons each gingerbread man will receive before they begin sharing. You could also provide a quantity that cannot be shared equally and encourage children to identify and discuss any buttons left over.

This practical activity supports children in developing their understanding of equal sharing, equal groups and early division, while strengthening counting, comparison, reasoning and mathematical language.
