Description

Help children develop their understanding of sharing equally with this fun pirate-themed maths activity. Children explore how quantities can be distributed between groups so that each group receives the same amount.

The resource includes a selection of pirate mats that can be laminated and used repeatedly. You can use all of the mats together or select a single mat depending on the quantity and level of challenge you are focusing on.

Coin images are included on the final page of the resource. These can be laminated and cut out for children to use, or you can provide real coins to make the activity even more practical and engaging.

Give children a selection of coins and ask them to share the coins equally between the pirates, dealing them out one at a time. Encourage children to explain how they have shared the coins and check whether each pirate has received the same amount.

This activity is ideal for Early Years and KS1, providing a practical introduction to equal sharing and the early concepts that underpin division. Dealing the coins out sequentially helps children develop a clear understanding of how a quantity can be distributed fairly between groups.

Children can practise:
Sharing quantities equally
Recognising equal groups
Counting accurately
Comparing quantities
Understanding early division
Using mathematical language
Explaining their mathematical thinking
Developing problem-solving skills

Encourage children to use mathematical language as they work. Useful questions include:

“How many coins did you have?”
“How many coins do they have each?”
“Do they have an equal amount?”
“How do you know they have the same?”
“Can you share the coins in a different way?”

The laminated mats and coins make this resource ideal for hands-on maths provision. Children can physically move the coins between the pirates, making it easier to see and understand equal distribution. Using real coins can also provide an opportunity to develop familiarity with money alongside early mathematical concepts.

The activity can be used as a teacher-led focus group, intervention or part of continuous provision. You can differentiate the activity by changing the number of coins provided or selecting different mats, allowing children to work with quantities that are appropriate for their stage of development.

For an extension, challenge children to predict how many coins each pirate will receive before sharing them. You could also provide quantities that cannot be shared equally and encourage children to notice and discuss when there are coins left over.

This practical pirate activity supports children in developing a secure understanding of equal sharing, equal groups and early division, while also strengthening counting, comparison, reasoning and mathematical language.
