Spotlight Sheets: focused practice, one question type at a time

Help pupils develop a secure understanding of finding 1 less by focusing on one skill at a time. These differentiated sheets provide focused practice writing the number that is 1 less than a given number, supporting pupils to move from counters and a number track to working from words and symbols with increasing independence. Ideal for targeted intervention, same-day catch-up and pupils who benefit from focused practice before moving on to mixed questions.

Description

Within a single small step, pupils often meet a range of question types. For many children this provides valuable challenge. For others, moving between question types can make it harder to secure the underlying concept.

Spotlight Sheets address this by isolating one question type at a time. Pupils can practise it with focus, develop fluency and build confidence before moving on to mixed questions. They are well suited to targeted intervention, same-day catch-up, or any pupil who benefits from a more focused approach.

Differentiated in three ways

  • Sheet 1: Supported: Counters show each starting number, so pupils can cross one out and count what is left. A 0–10 number track is provided.
  • Sheet 2: Core: There are no counters or number track, and some numbers are written as words.
  • Sheet 3: Extended: Pupils use a symbol key to find the starting number, which may involve adding, subtracting or doubling, then write the number that is 1 less.
