Spotlight Sheets: focused practice, one question type at a time
Help pupils develop a secure understanding of finding 1 less by focusing on one skill at a time. These differentiated sheets provide focused practice choosing the ten frame that shows 1 less than a given number, supporting pupils to move from using a number track to working with words and symbols with increasing independence. Ideal for targeted intervention, same-day catch-up and pupils who benefit from focused practice before moving on to mixed questions.

Spotlight Sheets: focused practice, one question type at a time
Within a single small step, pupils often meet a range of question types. For many children this provides valuable challenge. For others, moving between question types can make it harder to secure the underlying concept.
Spotlight Sheets address this by isolating one question type at a time. Pupils can practise it with focus, develop fluency and build confidence before moving on to mixed questions. They are well suited to targeted intervention, same-day catch-up, or any pupil who benefits from a more focused approach.
Differentiated in three ways
- Sheet 1: Supported: The counters fill each ten frame in order, there are two ten frames to choose from, and a 0–10 number track is provided.
- Sheet 2: Core: The counters are not in order, some numbers are written as words, and there are three ten frames to choose from.
- Sheet 3: Extended: Pupils use a symbol key to find the starting number, which may involve adding, subtracting or doubling, then choose from three ten frames.
