Build Year 2 pupils’ understanding of tens and ones with this focused Spotlight pack. Every question practises one skill: reading a base 10 part-whole model and completing “There are __ tens and __ ones. The number is __.”
Differentiated in three ways:
- Sheet 1: Supported: Neat base 10 with a tens number track.
- Sheet 2: Core: Scattered ones, larger numbers and a model with no ones.
- Sheet 3: Extended: One part has more than 9 ones, so pupils make another ten.

Spotlight Sheets: focused practice, one question type at a time
Within a single small step, pupils often meet a range of question types. For many children this provides valuable challenge. For others, moving between question types can make it harder to secure the underlying concept.
Spotlight Sheets address this by isolating one question type at a time. Pupils can practise it with focus, develop fluency and build confidence before moving on to mixed questions. They are well suited to targeted intervention, same-day catch-up, or any pupil who benefits from a more focused approach.

- Sheet 1: Supported: The base 10 is set out neatly, and a tens number track is provided.
- Sheet 2: Core: The ones are scattered, the numbers are larger and one model has no ones.
- Sheet 3: Extended: One part has more than 9 ones, so pupils make another ten before finding the number.
