Description
This Spring Themed Year 5 Haiku Poem resource introduces pupils to haiku poetry through an engaging and accessible spring context. Children explore how carefully chosen language can create vivid images and convey mood within a short, structured poem.
Pupils are reminded that a haiku is a three-line poem with a 5–7–5 syllable pattern, and that haikus traditionally focus on nature and the seasons. Spring provides a familiar theme, allowing pupils to draw on their own experiences and observations. An accompanying images sheet offers visual inspiration, featuring spring scenes that help spark ideas and discussion.
As part of the activity, pupils brainstorm spring vocabulary linked to the senses, such as what they can see, hear, smell and feel. This can be completed collaboratively or using whiteboards to support idea generation and vocabulary development. Model haikus are included to support understanding of structure, imagery and effective word choice. These can be used as a scaffold for pupils who need additional support, with syllable counts clearly shown on each line.
Pupils then write their own spring-themed haikus, carefully counting syllables and refining their word choices to ensure the poem fits the required pattern while creating a clear image or atmosphere. Opportunities for editing and improving first drafts are built into the activity, encouraging pupils to reflect on their writing.
This resource supports the Year 5 National Curriculum objectives for poetry, vocabulary development and editing writing for meaning and effect. It can be used as a standalone English lesson, a creative writing task within a poetry unit, or as part of a spring-themed writing sequence.
