Subtraction from 5 – Minibeasts
Help children develop subtraction skills to 5 with this engaging minibeasts maths activity. Children cross out minibeasts to model taking away, then count and record how many are left.
Description
Help children develop their understanding of subtraction to 5 with this engaging minibeasts maths activity. The resource provides a visual way for children to explore taking away and supports them as they work towards recalling subtraction facts.
Children can use the minibeasts to help them solve each subtraction calculation. Ask them to cross out the minibeasts being taken away, then count the minibeasts that remain to find the answer.
This practical visual approach helps children understand that subtraction involves removing a quantity from a group and finding out how many are left. It also supports children in making connections between the concrete representation and the written subtraction calculation.
Once children have worked out each answer, they can record it in the box provided. Encourage them to explain how they found the answer and use mathematical language such as take away, subtract, left, fewer and altogether.
Children can practise:
Subtraction facts to 5
Counting quantities accurately
Taking away objects from a group
Finding how many are left
Connecting pictures with subtraction calculations
Recording numerical answers
Developing early number sense
Building confidence with mental subtraction
Use the activity as an independent worksheet or as part of a focus group maths session with adult support. Children can also use counters, cubes or other small objects alongside the minibeasts to reinforce the subtraction concept.
Adult questioning can extend the learning with prompts such as, “How many minibeasts were there to start with?”, “How many did you cross out?” and “How many are left?”
As children become more confident, encourage them to solve the calculations without crossing out the minibeasts and then use the pictures to check their answers. This can help children gradually move towards recall of subtraction facts within 5.
This engaging Early Years and KS1 maths resource provides a clear visual introduction to subtraction and supports children in developing secure foundations for future calculation and number fluency.
