Description

Support children to develop their understanding of one more than numbers to 10 with these practical tens frame maths cards. The activity gives children an opportunity to explore what happens to a quantity when one more counter is added.

Simply laminate and cut out the cards, then ask children to place one more counter on the tens frame to find one more than the given number. Once they have found the new quantity, children can write the corresponding number using a whiteboard pen.

Using a tens frame provides a clear visual representation of number and helps children make connections between quantities and numerals. The practical nature of the activity encourages children to count carefully, recognise quantities and understand that adding one changes the number by one.

This resource is ideal for Early Years and KS1 and can be used during maths lessons, small-group activities, interventions, independent learning or continuous provision. It is particularly useful when introducing or reinforcing the language and concept of “one more than”.

Children can practise:

Finding one more than numbers to 10
Counting accurately
Adding one to a quantity
Recognising numbers to 10
Matching quantities to numerals
Using tens frames to represent numbers
Developing early number sense
Understanding how quantities change when one is added
Recording mathematical answers independently

For additional practical learning, provide children with counters, cubes or other manipulatives and encourage them to build the number shown on the card before adding one more. Ask questions such as “How many do you have?”, “What happens when you add one more?” and “What number comes next?”

This hands-on approach helps children develop confidence with early addition and build a secure understanding of the relationship between consecutive numbers.
