This Year 4 Multiplication and Division lesson is perfect for introducing or revisiting key multiplication facts up to 12 × 12, with a strong focus on building confidence, fluency, and understanding of the 12 times table. Designed as Working Without Worksheets: Lesson 1, this resource uses interactive teaching slides, hands-on activities and clear models to help children deepen their recall of multiplication and division facts. The lesson begins with a whole-class starter recapping prior learning from Year 3 and early Year 4. Children warm up by counting in multiples of 6, 7 and 9 and using number tracks to reinforce familiar patterns. They then explore a “mystery grid”, discovering that it is a multiplication grid up to 12 × 12. The teacher is guided through how to model using the grid to find products, identify corresponding division facts, and recognise numbers that appear in multiple times tables. During the main activity, each child receives their own multiplication grid to stick into their books. They roll dice to generate calculations, use the grid to check answers, and record the four related facts for each multiplication (commutative pair + related division facts). This builds fluency, reinforces inverse relationships and supports pupils who benefit from visual scaffolding. In the plenary, children analyse Tia’s mistake when solving 24 ÷ 8. Through guided discussion, they learn that identifying the correct times table on the multiplication grid is crucial when working with common multiples. This encourages children to reason mathematically and avoid common errors when interpreting products like 24, 36 and 72. The resource includes key questions, assessment opportunities and common misconceptions to support high-quality teaching. This structured and engaging lesson helps learners develop accuracy, recall and a deeper understanding of multiplication and division facts up to 12 × 12.
This pack is listed as editable, so the editable copy comes with it. We do not print page counts here, because our catalogue does not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.
