Look, say, cover, write, check
The spelling routine every primary classroom uses, one word at a time, on screen. See the word, say it, cover it, write it from memory, then check. 964 words across 121 sets: every year group from Year 1 to Year 6, each with its own spelling rules and its own word list, from the national curriculum and from Master the Curriculum’s own lists. Hear any word read out, or put it on the whiteboard and run it with the whole class. Nothing to print and nothing to sign in to.

The word lists
National curriculum for England, English Appendix 1, Year 1 statutory word list.
One child typing: the word is shown, then covered, then typed from memory. Whiteboard mode fills the screen for the back of the room. Escape comes back.
Where the words come from
Every word here comes from the national curriculum for England, English Appendix 1. Two different kinds of thing sit in there and this tool keeps them apart. The word lists are statutory: the Year 1 and Year 2 common exception words, the days of the week, and the lists for Years 3 and 4 and for Years 5 and 6, which a child has to be able to spell by the end of those years. The phonic sets are the spelling rules, each with the document’s own example words beside it, which is how spelling is taught: a set at a time, one pattern at a time. Appendix 1 gives every year group a rules table of its own, so every year group here has one, from Year 1’s sounds to the prefixes, endings and silent letters of Years 3 to 6.
The national curriculum sets one list for Years 3 and 4 together and one for Years 5 and 6 together. Each year group has its own button here, and the shared list appears under both of the years that learn it, so nothing is hidden behind a pair.
Our own three sets are on the same row of buttons. They are sounds rather than words, so each one opens the rule that teaches that sound, in the order we teach them in. Every one of those sounds now has words against it, including the ones Appendix 1 has no rule for: those word lists are Master the Curriculum’s own, and the screen says so under the word.
The spelling and grammar resources sit with the year group they belong to.
