About this resource

Working Without Worksheets – Year 1 Fractions: Finding Half of Objects and Shapes Take the next step in fractions with this Working Without Worksheets lesson for Year 1 Fractions, where children learn to find half of objects and shapes. Building on the previous lesson (recognising halves), pupils now use cutting, folding, and shading activities to explore how shapes can be split into 2 equal parts. The lesson begins with a recap starter, including: Ticking shapes that correctly show half Quick number bond recall 1 more and 1 less challenges within 20 Pupils are then introduced to the idea of finding halves by folding and cutting paper shapes such as circles, squares, and rectangles. Teacher modelling demonstrates how to check that the two parts are equal. Children then practise independently by folding or shading shapes to show one-half, before recording their learning directly in their maths books. The plenary consolidates learning with “half or not half?” examples, asking pupils to explain their reasoning. What’s Included in the Pack? ✔ Full teacher planning with objectives, key questions, and plenary guidance ✔ Starter: tick shapes that show half, number bonds, and 1 more/1 less practice ✔ Vocabulary focus: half, equal, unequal, part, whole, share, fair ✔ Practical tasks: folding, cutting, and shading shapes to find halves ✔ Independent recording: draw or shade halves in maths books ✔ Plenary: reasoning with “half or not half?” examples ✔ No worksheets—children record directly in their books Why Teachers Love This Resource: ✔ Builds directly on Lesson 1 (recognising half) for progression ✔ Hands-on activities with cutting and folding engage young learners ✔ Emphasises equality and fairness when finding halves ✔ Encourages neat, independent recording in books ✔ Worksheet-free and ready to use with slides and planning provided Curriculum Links (Year 1: Fractions): This lesson supports pupils to: ✔ Find and name one-half as 1 of 2 equal parts of an object or shapRead more
