About this resource

Make Year 5 coordinates and arithmetic practice engaging with this Remembrance Day themed maths mystery. This fun and purposeful activity combines coordinate plotting with a range of maths calculations, giving children the opportunity to practise their arithmetic skills while working towards a hidden Remembrance Day message. Children solve 14 maths questions, with each question providing the coordinates they need to plot on a grid. All coordinates are within the first quadrant, using positive numbers from 1 to 10, making this resource suitable for Year 5 children developing their confidence with reading and plotting coordinates. As children accurately solve each calculation and plot their coordinates, they discover letters hidden around the grid. Once all 14 coordinates have been plotted, the letters reveal the Remembrance Day message: WE WILL REMEMBER The activity is a great way to combine Year 5 maths with a Remembrance Day theme and can be used as an engaging lesson activity, independent maths task, morning work, early finisher activity or end-of-unit coordinates practice. The calculations provide opportunities to practise a range of Year 5 maths skills, including multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, addition, subtraction and mental arithmetic. Children also need to carefully read and plot coordinates, reinforcing the importance of identifying the x-coordinate first and the y-coordinate second. This low-preparation resource is ideal for use during the weeks around Remembrance Day and can be used alongside other Remembrance Day activities, maths mysteries and coordinate worksheets.
