About this resource

Make Year 5 maths festive with this engaging Christmas Year 5 Santa's Christmas Delivery Route Coordinates Task. This Christmas-themed coordinates activity gives children an enjoyable opportunity to practise reading, plotting and interpreting coordinates in the first quadrant while helping Santa plan his Christmas Eve deliveries. Children use a Christmas-themed coordinate grid to identify locations, follow movements and solve coordinate clues. The activities provide purposeful practice with key position and direction skills, while the festive context helps make coordinate work more engaging during the run-up to Christmas. The resource is suitable for Year 5 pupils who have already been introduced to coordinates in the first quadrant, which are commonly taught in Year 4. It can therefore be used as a useful revision activity, consolidation task or end-of-term Christmas maths activity. Children practise understanding the order of coordinates as (x, y), identifying and plotting points, and moving horizontally and vertically around a coordinate grid. They also have the opportunity to apply their knowledge to coordinate clues, encouraging mathematical reasoning and problem-solving rather than simply reading points from a grid. The activity can be used as a whole-class lesson, independent worksheet, paired activity, maths revision task, early finisher activity or festive end-of-term resource. A quick reminder that the x-coordinate is read first along the horizontal axis, followed by the y-coordinate on the vertical axis, may be helpful for pupils who need to refresh their prior learning. Skills Covered Reading coordinates in the first quadrant Plotting and identifying coordinates Understanding the order of coordinates: (x, y) Moving horizontally and vertically on a coordinate grid Applying reasoning to coordinate problems Solving clues using coordinates Developing mathematical problem-solving skills Perfect for: Year 5 maths lessons Coordinates and position and direction Read more
