About this resource

Support your Upper Key Stage 2 pupils in mastering the –able spelling rule with this Year 5/6 Spelling Resource Pack. The National Curriculum states that the –able ending is usually, but not always, used if a complete root word can be heard before it—even if there isn’t a related word ending in –ation. For example, in “reliable” the root word rely is heard, but the “y” changes to “i” before adding the suffix. This pack introduces children to the –able rule through engaging activities and clear examples, including dependable, comfortable, reliable, reasonable, understandable, and enjoyable. Pupils will investigate how the suffix changes root words, apply spelling rules in context, and develop both confidence and accuracy in their writing. With teaching slides, differentiated practice worksheets, and sentence-writing activities, this versatile, low-prep resource is perfect for whole-class lessons, small-group work, interventions, or independent learning. What’s Included in the Pack? ✔ Teaching slides explaining the –able rule with examples and tips ✔ Word sorting and investigation activities ✔ Differentiated worksheets to suit varied ability levels ✔ Sentence-writing and context-based application tasks ✔ Error-spotting and correction challenges ✔ Answer sheets for quick marking or self-assessment Why Teachers Love This Pack: ✔ Covers statutory Year 5/6 spelling requirements ✔ Differentiated and flexible—use for class, group, or individual work ✔ Blends spelling practice with grammar and vocabulary development ✔ Ideal for SPaG starters, interventions, homework, or SATs revision Curriculum Links: This pack supports the Upper Key Stage 2 National Curriculum for English by helping children: ✔ Spell words ending in –able correctly ✔ Recognise root words and apply the correct spelling rules ✔ Use new vocabulary confidently in their writing Whether introducing the –able rule for the first time or revising ahead of SATs, this resource makes spelling practice engaging, accessiRead more
