About this resource

Make Year 6 maths festive with this engaging Christmas Party Planner problem-solving activity. Set in the context of organising a Christmas party for 48 elves, this resource gives children the opportunity to apply a range of important maths skills in a fun and purposeful Christmas-themed scenario. Children begin by working out how much food and drink is needed for the party. They use fractions, multiplication and division to calculate quantities, including finding fractions of amounts and working with measurements such as millilitres and litres. They then use this information in the second activity to calculate costs and decide whether Santa can afford everything within his budget. The second part introduces money and decimal calculations, as well as a percentage discount on the cupcakes. Children need to calculate the discount, find the new price and combine several costs before deciding whether Santa has enough money to pay for the party. The final questions provide opportunities for reasoning and problem-solving, encouraging pupils to explain their answers and compare different costs rather than simply completing calculations. This resource is ideal for Year 6 Christmas maths lessons, end-of-term revision, independent work, paired activities, early finishers or Christmas-themed problem-solving. It provides a useful opportunity to revisit and apply a range of mathematical skills in a context that is engaging and relevant to the festive season.
