Support children to develop their understanding of number and quantity with this engaging minibeast comparison activity. Children are encouraged to look carefully at each group of minibeasts and compare the quantities to identify which group has more and which has fewer. This simple visual activity provides an opportunity for children to develop their early number sense and understand that groups of objects can be compared based on their quantity. Encourage children to explain their thinking and use the mathematical language ‘more’ and ‘fewer’ as they compare the groups. The resource is ideal for Early Years and KS1 maths and can be used as part of whole-class teaching, small-group work, independent learning, continuous provision or a maths intervention. Children can practise: Comparing groups of objects Recognising which group has more Recognising which group has fewer Developing an understanding of quantity Developing early number sense Using mathematical vocabulary such as more and fewer Explaining their mathematical thinking Making visual comparisons between quantities The minibeast theme makes this a fun and accessible way to introduce and reinforce comparing quantities. Children can first discuss what they notice about each group before deciding which contains more or fewer minibeasts. For additional practical learning, encourage children to recreate the groups using counters or other manipulatives and physically compare the quantities. This can help children connect the visual representations with real quantities and deepen their understanding of number. A useful early years maths resource for developing children's confidence with comparing quantities and using the language of more and fewer.
This pack is print and go. Our catalogue does not list an editable copy of it, so none is offered here rather than promising a file nobody has opened. Page counts are not printed either, because we do not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.
