Count Beyond 10 – Building Teen Numbers

Help children count beyond 10 and develop their understanding of teen numbers with this hands-on tens frame activity. Children choose a number card and add counters to the second tens frame to make the number shown, supporting accurate counting, number composition and recognition of the pattern of numbers 11–20. Ideal for Early Years and KS1 maths.

About this resource

Support children in developing their understanding of numbers beyond 10 with this practical counting beyond 10 activity using tens frames and counters. This resource is designed to help children recognise the patterns and composition of teen numbers, while developing accurate counting and early number sense. To use the resource, simply laminate the sheets and cut them into individual cards. Ask children to choose a card showing a number between 11 and 20. They then use counters to complete the second tens frame, adding the correct number of counters to represent the number shown. This hands-on activity encourages children to look carefully at the structure of teen numbers and recognise that numbers from 11 to 20 are made up of one full ten and some more ones. Using the tens frames helps make this mathematical concept visual and supports children to connect the numeral with its quantity. The activity is ideal for Early Years and KS1 maths, and can be used during whole-class teaching, small-group work, maths interventions, continuous provision or independent learning. It is particularly useful when introducing or reinforcing teen numbers, counting on from 10, number composition and tens frames. Children can practise: Counting accurately beyond 10 Recognising numbers from 11 to 20 Understanding the composition of teen numbers Recognising the visual pattern of a full ten and additional ones Matching numerals to quantities Developing confidence with tens frames and counters Building early number sense and mathematical reasoning For additional practice, use this resource alongside our counting the counters on tens frames worksheet. The two resources work well together to give children opportunities to explore teen numbers through both practical, hands-on learning and written activities. This is a simple and engaging teen numbers maths activity that can be revisited regularly to help children develop a secure understanding of numbers beyond 10.Read more

This pack is print and go. Our catalogue does not list an editable copy of it, so none is offered here rather than promising a file nobody has opened. Page counts are not printed either, because we do not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.
