About this resource

Support children to develop their understanding of numbers beyond 10 with these engaging tens frame worksheets. Children are encouraged to recognise the complete tens frame first and then count on from 10 to find the total number of counters. This visual approach helps children recognise the pattern and composition of teen numbers and develop a more secure understanding of how numbers 11–20 are made. The resource includes two differentiated worksheets, making it easy to provide an appropriate level of challenge and support for different learners. On the first sheet, children count the counters shown on the tens frames and write the corresponding number. This provides valuable practice in accurate counting beyond 10, while encouraging children to recognise the full group of 10 before counting the additional counters. The second sheet provides an additional challenge. Children count the counters and then complete a number sentence to show the composition of the number. This helps children begin to understand that teen numbers are made up of one ten and some additional ones. Children can practise: Counting beyond 10 Counting on from 10 Recognising a complete group of 10 Recognising numbers from 11 to 20 Understanding the composition of teen numbers Developing early place value understanding Counting counters accurately Representing numbers using tens frames Completing number sentences Connecting quantities, numerals and number composition The differentiated sheets make this resource suitable for Early Years and KS1 maths, and they can be used for whole-class teaching, small-group work, independent learning, maths interventions or as a follow-up activity after practical exploration. This resource works particularly well alongside a practical teen numbers activity using counters, allowing children to first build teen numbers themselves before applying their understanding to the worksheets. What you get, one file

  • PDFActivity

This pack is print and go. Our catalogue does not list an editable copy of it, so none is offered here rather than promising a file nobody has opened. Page counts are not printed either, because we do not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.

★★★ Differentiated three ways
  • Working towardsScaffolded, with the model or the bar already drawn.
  • Working withinThe expected standard for the year group.
  • Greater depthReasoning and explaining, not just more of the same.

Our own system, with the star count repeated in every worksheet header so a child can be handed the right sheet without a word.
