This Year 3 Place Value – Order 3-Digit Numbers lesson plan supports pupils in learning to compare and order numbers up to 1,000, in line with the National Curriculum objective. Designed for the Spring term and following a Working Without Worksheets approach, this engaging maths lesson builds directly on prior learning about comparing 3-digit numbers. Children revisit how to compare numbers by starting with the hundreds column, before moving to tens and ones when necessary. They then apply this understanding to confidently order groups of numbers from smallest to greatest. Through carefully sequenced, animated teaching slides, pupils learn to: Identify the greatest and smallest numbers using place value knowledge Order sets of 3-digit numbers accurately Explain their reasoning using mathematical vocabulary Avoid common errors such as comparing digits in the wrong column The lesson includes practical, discussion-based activities where pupils use base 10 equipment, place value charts and place value counters to build and compare numbers. Using cut-up 3-digit number cards, children work collaboratively to select, compare and order numbers, recording their findings in their maths books. This resource includes: Clear, ready-to-teach animated slides A structured recap of comparing 3-digit numbers Partner activities using manipulatives Practical ordering challenges Key questioning prompts to deepen reasoning Assessment opportunities linked to National Curriculum objectives Guidance on common misconceptions (such as starting with the ones column or confusing ascending and descending order) Ideal for Year 3 teachers looking for a mastery-focused lesson on ordering numbers to 1,000, this resource promotes fluency, reasoning and mathematical discussion — all without the need for worksheets.
This pack is listed as editable, so the editable copy comes with it. We do not print page counts here, because our catalogue does not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.
