Help your Year 4 pupils develop a deep understanding of place value and counting in multiples of 100 with this engaging, hands-on maths lesson. Designed to build fluency and reasoning, this lesson connects new learning to children’s prior knowledge of counting in 10s and reinforces the concept of scaling by ten. Using animated slides, Base 10 resources, and practical counting activities, pupils explore how numbers grow in hundreds and how the digits change as we move through multiples of 100. Through visual and physical representations, children discover that 100 is ten times greater than 10 and one hundred times greater than 1 — strengthening their understanding of the number system and place value to 1,000. In the main activity, children work in small groups to build to 1,000 using 100 blocks, counting aloud in hundreds as they construct and record their multiples. They then solve a real-life word problem involving counting in 100g cereal boxes to meet a target weight, developing both fluency and reasoning. The lesson includes: Clear alignment with the National Curriculum objective: “Count in multiples of 6, 7, 9, 25 and 1000; find 1000 more or less than a given number.” Key questions to promote mathematical discussion and reasoning. Assessment opportunities for checking fluency, understanding, and reasoning. Guidance on addressing common misconceptions, such as confusing counting in 10s with counting in 100s or place value errors. This Working Without Worksheets lesson is ideal for developing children’s conceptual understanding of place value, number relationships, and the structure of our base-10 number system.
This pack is listed as editable, so the editable copy comes with it. We do not print page counts here, because our catalogue does not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.
