About this resource

Working Without Worksheets – Year 1 Fractions: Recognising Quarters Introduce your Year 1 pupils to quarters with this Working Without Worksheets lesson for Year 1 Fractions. This practical, hands-on session helps children understand that a quarter means 4 equal parts, using folding, sorting, and reasoning activities to build conceptual understanding. The lesson begins with a recap starter, including: Finding half of a number Completing a ten frame to show number bonds Completing a number track to practise sequencing Pupils are then introduced to quarters by watching a paper plate folded into 4 equal parts, helping them see that each part is one quarter. They move on to sorting shapes into “quarters” and “not quarters”, reasoning whether the divisions are fair and equal. For independent work, children record examples in their maths books by shading and labelling shapes that are correctly quartered. The plenary is a fun, visual task where children check different pizzas to decide if they have been cut into 4 equal parts, reinforcing the key concept that a quarter must always be equal. What’s Included in the Pack? ✔ Full teacher planning with objectives, modelling, and plenary guidance ✔ Starter: find half of a number, complete a ten frame, and complete a number track ✔ Vocabulary focus: quarter, half, equal, unequal, part, whole, share, fair ✔ Practical activity: fold a paper plate into 4 equal parts to model quarters ✔ Sorting task: decide whether shapes show quarters or not ✔ Independent recording: shade and label quarters in maths books ✔ Plenary: “Pizza Check” – identify if pizzas are cut into quarters ✔ No worksheets—children record directly in their books Why Teachers Love This Resource: ✔ Hands-on, visual introduction to quarters ✔ Builds naturally on halving to extend fraction knowledge ✔ Encourages reasoning about equal vs unequal parts ✔ Engaging, relatable activities like folding plates and pizza checking ✔ Worksheet-free, with neat recording directly in bRead more
