About this resource

This Year 3 Place Value – Estimating Numbers on a Number Line lesson plan supports pupils in developing confidence when estimating and positioning numbers up to 1,000. Building on prior learning in place value and fractions, the lesson begins with fluency practice counting in 10s and 100s, alongside identifying numbers represented in pictorial models. Pupils also revisit finding halfway points between numbers, preparing them for accurate estimation on number lines. The focus of the lesson is on understanding scale and interval value. Using carefully structured teaching slides, children explore number lines from 0 to 1,000 with equal intervals, learning that: Each interval can represent a fixed value (for example, 100) 500 is halfway between 0 and 1,000 Halfway points help improve estimation accuracy Estimation involves reasoning, not guessing Pupils practise identifying numbers indicated by arrows, counting in 100s, and using benchmark numbers to support their thinking. They then move on to estimating positions on number lines with different start and end points (for example, 300 to 400), reinforcing the importance of checking the scale carefully. During the main activity, children work collaboratively using number cards with different representations. They: Build their own number lines Estimate and mark the position of selected numbers Glue blank number lines into their maths books Justify their reasoning using place value vocabulary The plenary encourages critical thinking, as pupils evaluate a statement about number lines with different end points. This helps address common misconceptions around scale and interval size. This resource includes: Clear, structured teaching slides Fluency recap and halfway-point practice Partner-based number line construction activities Blank number lines for independent application Reasoning and discussion opportunities Explicit focus on common misconceptions, including: Misinterpreting scale changes Assuming intervals always represRead more
