About this resource

This Year 3 Place Value Problem Solving lesson plan brings together key learning from across the place value unit, enabling pupils to apply their understanding of 3-digit numbers to a range of reasoning and problem-solving contexts. Designed as a consolidation lesson, this resource revisits reading and writing numbers in words and numerals, matching representations to numbers, and identifying place value within 3-digit numbers. These starter activities act as formative assessment opportunities before pupils move into deeper mathematical reasoning. The focus of the lesson is on applying place value knowledge to solve problems involving addition, subtraction and number representations. Through carefully structured teaching slides and guided discussion, pupils: Identify the value of digits within 3-digit numbers Interpret and compare pictorial representations Balance scales using place value understanding Represent numbers using base 10, counters and place value charts Solve word problems using concrete and pictorial methods Recognise that some problems have multiple possible solutions Children are encouraged to explain their reasoning, justify their answers and explore alternative solutions. Modelling with base 10 equipment, place value counters and place value charts supports conceptual understanding and bridges concrete and abstract methods. During the main activity, pupils work through a set of problem-solving questions, recording their reasoning clearly in their maths books. They may choose to draw representations or use manipulatives to support their thinking. The plenary further develops reasoning skills, as children reflect on their strategies and create their own place value problem for a partner to solve. This resource includes: Structured recap activities for assessment Multi-step place value reasoning tasks Word problems involving addition and subtraction Opportunities for flexible representation Discussion-based plenary activities Key questioning prompts tRead more
