This Year 3 subtraction resource is designed to help children develop confidence using the formal written method to subtract 3-digit numbers. The lesson begins with a starter that recaps key learning from Year 3 place value and the Year 2 summer term. Children discuss a series of true or false calculations, explain their reasoning, and correct incorrect statements. Visual representations support understanding and allow pupils to revisit essential place value concepts before moving on to the formal method. In the introduction, the teacher explains that the focus of the lesson is subtracting 3-digit numbers using the column method. A place value chart is used to model how to line up digits correctly in hundreds, tens, and ones columns. The slides demonstrate how to subtract from each column in the correct order, highlighting the importance of accuracy, place value understanding, and neat presentation. Children then complete a guided example on their whiteboards, followed by a partnered example to provide an assessment opportunity before independent work begins. For the main activity, children use the column method to solve a range of subtraction questions. They select a question from the cut-up resource sheet, record it in their maths books, and draw the column layout themselves to ensure they understand the structure of the method. Some pupils may choose to use place value counters or base-10 equipment to support their understanding and develop confidence with mental subtraction and regrouping. The plenary revisits the core learning by asking, “Which column do we subtract first?” and inviting children to share completed work. Pupils then work together to solve a subtraction calculation with missing numbers, explaining their reasoning and methodology before the correct values are revealed. Common misconceptions addressed include misaligned digits, starting subtraction from the wrong column, presentation errors, and uncertainty with mental subtraction. This resource su
