Description
Looking for a fun and festive Christmas maths activity for Year 3? This Christmas jumper worksheet combines maths, creativity and careful following of instructions in a simple activity that children aged 7–8 can complete independently.
In this activity, pupils become Christmas jumper designers for Santa’s elves! They are given a blank Christmas jumper template and challenged to decorate it according to a set of instructions.
Children need to carefully count and include the correct number of different Christmas-themed symbols, including stars, snowflakes, Christmas trees, presents and bells. They also need to create a repeating pattern around the bottom of their jumper.
🎅 What’s included?
The activity asks pupils to include:
⭐ 5 stars
❄️ 3 snowflakes
🎄 2 Christmas trees
🎁 4 presents
🔔 6 bells
A repeating Christmas pattern
Children can use coloured pencils, crayons or felt tips to bring their Christmas jumper designs to life.
✏️ What skills does this activity develop?
This Christmas jumper worksheet provides opportunities for children to practise:
Counting accurately
Recognising and creating repeating patterns
Following written instructions
Checking their work against given criteria
Attention to detail
Independent working
Creativity and design
The activity is particularly useful for Year 3 Christmas activities, end-of-term maths lessons, Christmas-themed morning work, independent work, early-finisher activities or a fun final lesson before the Christmas holidays.
🎄 Why children will enjoy it
Rather than completing a traditional set of maths questions, children have a creative challenge to complete. They need to use their maths and reasoning skills to make sure their jumper contains exactly the right number of each Christmas symbol.
The open-ended design element also means that every child’s finished jumper can look completely different, while still meeting the same set of mathematical criteria.
The activity can also provide a useful opportunity to revisit the idea of repeating patterns. Before children begin, you could discuss what makes a pattern repeat and ask them to identify the repeating part of a simple example.
