About this resource

Make Year 4 maths engaging and purposeful with this festive Christmas Shopping Activity. This resource provides children with 10 progressively challenging word problems based around realistic Christmas shopping scenarios, helping them apply their addition and subtraction skills to numbers up to 1,000. Children use the displayed price tags on Christmas toy items to identify the information needed for each problem. They then use addition, subtraction, comparison and multi-step reasoning to work out totals, calculate change, manage budgets, compare costs and solve more complex shopping problems. The Christmas shopping context gives children an opportunity to see how mathematics can be applied in everyday situations, while the increasing difficulty provides a structured challenge throughout the activity. What Children Will Practise Children will develop their ability to: Add and subtract three-digit numbers Calculate the total cost of multiple items Find change from larger amounts of money Compare the costs of different purchases Solve multi-step addition and subtraction problems Work with shopping amounts above £100 Manage a budget and determine how much can be spent Apply fixed-amount discounts to purchases Combine and compare totals from different shoppers Use repeated multiplication within a larger problem Extract relevant information from price tags Choose appropriate operations to solve real-world problems Increasing Challenge The 10 Christmas shopping word problems gradually increase in complexity, giving children opportunities to build confidence before tackling more demanding multi-step calculations. Problems 1–2 focus on addition and subtraction using three-digit numbers. Problems 3–4 introduce multiple items and shopping amounts above £100, encouraging children to combine several prices accurately. Problems 5–6 develop comparison skills and introduce multi-step subtraction problems. Problems 7–8 focus on managing a shopping budget and applying a fixed-amount Read more

This pack is print and go. Our catalogue does not list an editable copy of it, so none is offered here rather than promising a file nobody has opened. Page counts are not printed either, because we do not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.
