About this resource

Make symmetry festive with this engaging Year 4 Christmas maths activity! This Christmas Symmetry resource gives children the opportunity to explore lines of symmetry using a range of fun Christmas-themed shapes, snowflakes and bauble designs. Children begin by identifying and drawing lines of symmetry on festive shapes before considering how many lines of symmetry a snowflake has. They are then challenged to create their own Christmas shapes with at least one line of symmetry, encouraging them to apply their understanding independently. What Children Will Practise Identifying lines of symmetry in Christmas-themed shapes. Drawing lines of symmetry accurately. Exploring how many lines of symmetry different shapes can have. Creating their own symmetrical festive shapes. Investigating whether Christmas baubles are symmetrical. Explaining why a design may not be symmetrical. Designing baubles with a vertical line of symmetry. One of the activities encourages children to think more deeply about symmetry by examining the statement that all baubles have a vertical line of symmetry. Children must explain why this is incorrect, recognising that patterns and decorations can affect whether the complete design is symmetrical. Christmas Maths with a Reasoning Challenge This resource goes beyond simply drawing mirror lines. Children are encouraged to explain their reasoning, identify errors and justify whether a shape or design is symmetrical. The open-ended drawing tasks also provide opportunities for children to demonstrate their understanding creatively. Children can use rulers and mirrors to help identify and check lines of symmetry, making the activities particularly useful for developing practical understanding alongside mathematical vocabulary. Ideal for Year 4 Christmas Maths This resource is ideal for a Year 4 Christmas maths lesson, independent practice, a Christmas maths activity, early-finisher task or festive geometry challenge.
