About this resource

Help children develop their understanding of doubling with this fun and practical double facts to 5 maths activity. The ladybird theme provides a familiar and engaging context for children to explore equal groups, counting and early addition. Children are asked to look at the number of spots on one side of each ladybird and draw the same number of spots on the other side. They can then carefully count all the spots to discover the corresponding double fact. This activity is ideal for Early Years and KS1, supporting children to recognise that doubling means adding the same number to itself. For example, if a ladybird has 3 spots on one side, children draw 3 spots on the other side and count 6 spots altogether. Encourage children to use mathematical language as they work. Ask questions such as: “How many spots can you see?” “How many spots will you draw on the other side?” “How many spots are there altogether?” “What double have you found?” “Can you say the number sentence?” Children can practise: Double facts from 1 to 5 Counting accurately Recognising equal groups Understanding doubling as adding the same amount Developing early addition skills Using mathematical language to explain their thinking Building confidence with number facts The ladybird activity can be used during a teacher-led focus group, as an independent maths activity or as part of continuous provision. Laminate the ladybirds so children can use them repeatedly with whiteboard pens, or provide counters and small loose parts for children to physically build the equal groups before drawing the spots. For an extension, encourage children to record the double facts they discover using number sentences, such as 2 + 2 = 4 or 5 + 5 = 10. Children could also create their own ladybirds and challenge a partner to find the double. This practical activity helps children make the connection between equal groups, doubling and addition, providing a strong foundation for developing number sense and fluency with earlRead more

This pack is print and go. Our catalogue does not list an editable copy of it, so none is offered here rather than promising a file nobody has opened. Page counts are not printed either, because we do not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.
