About this resource

Develop logic, reasoning and problem-solving skills with this engaging Remembrance-themed picture-based logic puzzle for Year 2. This activity challenges children to carefully examine a grid and use three important rules to work out which picture belongs in each empty space. To complete the puzzle, children need to make sure that each picture appears only once in each row, column and smaller 2×2 box. They will need to look across the whole grid, use the available clues and rule out pictures that cannot fit. This Year 2 picture-based logic puzzle encourages children to think systematically and apply logical reasoning to solve a problem. Children can be encouraged to explain their thinking using clear reasoning, such as, “It can’t go here because there is already one in this row,” or “This picture cannot go in this box because it is already there.” The activity also encourages children to check their work carefully and make sure that all three rules have been followed throughout the completed puzzle. Skills supported include: Logical reasoning Problem-solving Systematic thinking Pattern recognition Visual discrimination Attention to detail Using clues to eliminate possibilities Explaining mathematical thinking Checking and evaluating solutions This activity is particularly suitable for Year 2 children who are developing confidence with logical reasoning and are ready to use multiple rules to solve a picture-based puzzle. It can be used as an independent reasoning task, a small-group maths activity, an early finisher challenge or as part of a wider Remembrance-themed lesson. Can the children use all three rules to solve the puzzle and explain how they know each picture belongs in its space?Read more
