About this resource

Support children's early mathematical development and understanding of shape with this practical composing and decomposing shapes activity. Designed for EYFS and Reception children, this resource encourages young learners to explore how different shapes can fit together to create larger shapes. To prepare the activity, simply laminate the shapes and cut them out. Children are then challenged to find individual pieces that fit together to build the red target shapes. As they experiment with different combinations, children develop their understanding of shape, spatial relationships and how shapes can be composed and decomposed. The activity can be used as an adult-led focus group activity or added to maths provision and continuous provision for children to explore independently. It provides opportunities for children to investigate different possibilities, make choices and explain their mathematical thinking. Encourage discussion and mathematical language by asking questions such as: Can you find two shapes that fit together to make a _____? Which shapes have you used? What can you make with ______? How many ____ have been used to make this shape? These open-ended questions help children develop their mathematical vocabulary, describe the shapes they are using and explain how they have combined them. Children can also explore whether they can find different ways to create the same target shape. This EYFS shape activity is particularly useful for developing spatial reasoning and problem-solving skills. By manipulating and rearranging physical shapes, children gain practical experience of how smaller shapes can be combined to make a larger shape. This shape activity is ideal for: EYFS and Reception children Composing and decomposing shapes Shape and space activities Spatial reasoning development Mathematical problem-solving Developing mathematical vocabulary Maths focus groups Continuous provision Independent maths exploration Adult-led learning A hands-on EYFS maths sRead more

This pack is print and go. Our catalogue does not list an editable copy of it, so none is offered here rather than promising a file nobody has opened. Page counts are not printed either, because we do not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.
