Support children's early mathematical development, shape knowledge and fine motor skills with this hands-on composing and decomposing shapes play dough activity. Designed for EYFS and Reception children, this resource provides a fun and practical way for children to explore how shapes can be made, changed and separated into new shapes. To prepare the activity, simply laminate the cards and divide them into two. Place the cards in maths provision or continuous provision alongside play dough, shape cutters and suitable cutting tools. Children are first encouraged to use the play dough to make the shape shown at the top of the card. Once they have created the shape, they can then use the lower image as a guide to cut or divide the shape as shown. This gives children a practical experience of composing and decomposing shapes and allows them to explore what happens when a shape is separated into smaller parts. The activity encourages children to manipulate materials, experiment with shapes and develop their understanding through hands-on exploration. Using play dough also provides opportunities to strengthen fine motor skills, hand strength and coordination, while children roll, press, shape and cut the dough. Encourage children to talk about their mathematical thinking using questions such as: What shape did you make? What new shapes have you made? Can you make any other shapes? These questions encourage children to use mathematical vocabulary, describe the shapes they have created and consider different ways of composing and decomposing shapes. The open-ended nature of the activity makes it ideal for continuous provision, allowing children to revisit the cards and explore shape independently or with adult support. It can also be used as part of an adult-led maths focus group or small-group activity. This play dough shape activity is ideal for: EYFS and Reception children Composing and decomposing shapes Shape and space exploration Spatial reasoning development Maths co
