About this resource

Support children's early counting, number recognition and number writing skills with this fun and accessible New Year themed EYFS counting activity. Designed for Reception and EYFS children, this resource provides an engaging way for children to practise counting objects accurately and recording the corresponding number. Children are encouraged to carefully count each group of objects and record the number underneath. To support accurate counting, encourage children to cross off or mark each object as they count, helping them develop one-to-one correspondence and avoid counting objects more than once. There are two differentiated counting worksheets included, making it easy to choose an appropriate level of challenge for different learners: Counting 1–5 objects – ideal for children developing their early counting skills and number recognition. Counting 1–10 objects – provides additional challenge for children who are ready to count larger groups. The worksheets can be used as a traditional EYFS maths worksheet or laminated for repeated use with a whiteboard pen. This makes the resource versatile for classroom maths provision and allows children to revisit the activity to build confidence and fluency. The activity is suitable for use as an adult-led focus group activity, during independent maths work or as part of continuous provision. It also provides a useful assessment opportunity, allowing practitioners to observe children's ability to count accurately, recognise numbers and write the corresponding numeral. Use this activity as part of a New Year themed maths lesson, at the beginning of a new term, or alongside other New Year activities and early years number resources. What you get, one file

  • PDFActivity

This pack is print and go. Our catalogue does not list an editable copy of it, so none is offered here rather than promising a file nobody has opened. Page counts are not printed either, because we do not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.

★★★ Differentiated three ways
  • Working towardsScaffolded, with the model or the bar already drawn.
  • Working withinThe expected standard for the year group.
  • Greater depthReasoning and explaining, not just more of the same.

Our own system, with the star count repeated in every worksheet header so a child can be handed the right sheet without a word.
