About this resource

Working Without Worksheets – Year 1 Lesson: Identify One More or One Less (Numbers to 100) Build fluency with numbers to 100 in this engaging Working Without Worksheets lesson for Year 1 Place Value. Designed for classrooms that prioritise active learning over worksheets, this lesson uses practical exploration, interactive games, and independent recording to secure understanding of finding one more and one less. The lesson begins with a whole-class counting starter using movement (stomping, clapping, jumping) to build number fluency. Pupils then use a hundred square to explore how adding one more moves a counter one space right and finding one less moves it one space left, noticing what happens at the end or start of rows. Children practise circling numbers on their own hundred squares, completing sentences such as “One more than 58 is 59” and “One less than 58 is 57”. The plenary reinforces fluency with quick-fire challenges to find one more or one less without using the hundred square.
